2018 Law Alumni Awards Recipients Honored

As part of Law Reunion Weekend, the 2018 alumni awards were presented on Sunday, October 21, 2018.

About the Program

In 2009, Iowa Law launched an alumni awards program to recognize law alumni who have made significant achievements in their careers and in their service to the College of Law. Awards are presented annually in four different categories:

  • Emerging Leader Award – granted to alumni of the College of Law for early career achievements in their area of practice and in their service to the college, community, state, or nation.
  • Alumni Achievement Award – granted to alumni of the College of Law for significant accomplishments in their law careers and significant service to the College of Law.
  • Alumni Service Award – granted to alumni of the College of Law for significant service to the college, university, community, state, or nation.
  • The Iowa Law Review Alumni Achievement award is awarded by the Iowa Law Review board.

We are pleased to announce the 2018 honorees.

Natalie Bolling with Linda McGuire and Kevin Washburn
Emerging Leader Award – Natalie R. Bolling

From a federal clerkship to private practice to in house counsel, she’s achieved much in her first 15 years after graduating from Iowa Law. A 2003 Iowa Law graduate, Bolling is currently in-house (employment and compliance) at Vulcan Materials Company, a company employing over 7,000 people at 300 facilities. She has been a leader in her field and made important contributions to diversity and inclusion in the profession as well as mentoring and developing the talents of new lawyers.

Maja with Daniel Moeller and Kevin Washburn
Iowa Law Review Alumni Achievement Award – Maja C. Eaton

A 1984 Iowa Law graduate, Eaton is a partner at Sidley Austin LLP in Chicago, Illinois, and is a member of the firm’s executive committee. Eaton specializes in products liability and mass torts. Eaton was a member of the Volume 69 editorial board where she served as a Note and Comment Editor. When the editorial board selected her for this award, they saw someone who had not only achieved incredible success in her career, but who also used that success to help the careers of others.

Dennis with Bob and Kevin
Alumni Service Award – Dennis Groenenboom

After graduating from Iowa Law in 1978, Groenenboom joined Iowa Legal Services, now known Iowa Legal Aid. He worked as a staff attorney, managing attorney, senior staff attorney, and deputy director, prior to becoming the executive director of Iowa Legal Aid in 1992. A position he held until his retirement almost a year ago. His entire career has been devoted to the service of those who do not have the financial resources to afford private legal representation, and the work that he has done in this regard has restored the faith of many low-income Iowans that our legal and economic systems can work for them.

Dana with Bob and Kevin
Alumni Achievement Award – C. Dana Waterman III

A 1971 Iowa Law graduate, Waterman has practiced for more than 45 years at the Davenport, Iowa-based firm of Lane & Waterman. Waterman has been a member of the Iowa Law School Foundation since 2004. During which time, he co-chaired the recent Iowa Inspired capital campaign for the Iowa Law School Foundation, which exceeded its $50 million goal at the close of 2016. His leadership to the board also includes service as the president from 2014 until this past spring. In addition to the ILSF board, he serves on numerous community boards, including the Quad-Cities Chamber of Commerce, the Quad-City Defense Alliance, Genesis Health System, University of Iowa Health Alliance, and Augustana College. He also serves on the board of several privately-held companies, as co-trustee of the Hubbell-Waterman Foundation and a founding co-trustor of the Quad-City Cultural Trust. In 2015, Junior Achievement of the Heartland named him as a Laureate in its Quad-Cities Business Hall of Fame.
