College of Law clinics teach students about transactional law, federal defense

A pair of new legal clinics at the University of Iowa College of Law offers students unique learning opportunities related to transactional and criminal law, as well as hands-on experience in working with clients and appearing in federal court. The Community Empowerment Law Project, run by Daria Fisher Page, and the Federal Criminal Defense Clinic, overseen by Alison K. Guernsey, launched in January 2018 after several months of preparation by the two associate clinical professors of law.

Legal Clinic works to limit physical restrains and seclusion rooms in Iowa schools

Law and Policy in Action Clinic law students and faculty are playing a pivotal role in an initiative to limit the use of physical restraints or seclusion rooms in Iowa schools. They are part of an attorney workgroup that petitioned the Iowa Department of Education to revise its rules and ensure that seclusion rooms and physical restraints are used only emergency situations, are used only as a last resort, and are never used to discipline or punish students.
