Frankfort, IL

Though Katie Conterio was initially fascinated by the prospect of becoming a lawyer shortly after learning about the Bill of Rights during a 7th grad social studies class, she knew she wanted to pursue the profession after participating in mock trial during her sophomore year of college.

“I took the Constitution home and read it again and was amazed on where our government originated from and the power in a single document,” says Conterio. “Later that week we had an attorney come to our class and I was hooked – I carried his business card with me for a long time after that eager to explore the law myself.”

Now a second-year student at Iowa Law, Conterio has volunteered for the Citizen Lawyer Program, and is looking forward to working as a research assistant this fall. Over the summer, she worked as a law clerk at Lucas, Thompson and Wise, LLC in Joliet, Illinois, where she was exposed to a variety of different types of law and able to improve her research and writing skills. Next summer, she will be working at Sherman & Howard in Denver in their Tax & Estate Planning Group.

Once she graduates in May 2019, Conterio says she is most looking forward to seeing where her degree takes her.

“I know where I want my first step after law school to be – but after that I have a couple ideas of where I want my career to go,” says Conterio. “I enjoy the flexibly of my degree and am looking forward to just life unfolding.”
