Get to know … Mary Grace Warren, 2L

Mary Grace Warren, 2L
Jefferson City, Missouri

Mary Grace Warren’s first foray into the legal profession was an internship with Justice Mary Russell of the Supreme Court of Missouri.

Warren says that experience as an undergraduate at Allegheny College solidified a long-standing interest in law that continued as she focused her college studies on legal history.

“That was my first taste of crafting legal arguments and writing and researching,” she says of her internship. “After that, I knew law school was my next step.”

Warren has kept busy during her time at the University of Iowa College of Law. She is a member of Phi Alpha Delta, the Women Lawyers’ Association of Greater St. Louis and the Organization for Women Law Students and Staff. She is a research assistant for Professor Sarah Seo throughout the year, and for Professor Stella Elias during the winter session’s London Law Program.

This past summer, Warren served as a legal intern in the Law Office of Mark Rudder, LLC in St. Louis and as a judicial extern for Judge Colleen Dolan of the Missouri Court of Appeals, Eastern District.

Warren says her success at Iowa Law has been due in part to the backing of her professors and fellow students.

“At Iowa Law I have experienced a community of supportive students and encouraging professors, which has made the challenges of assimilating to law school and relocating out of state so much easier,” she says. “Iowa Law is unique in that students actively seek out and mentor younger students. I was fortunate enough to have many students ‘adopt’ and mentor me, and that is a practice I plan to continue.”

Warren says she plans to specialize in government solutions and relations, but also has an interest in estate planning, labor and employment law and real estate development. She’s looking forward to this summer when she will join the St. Louis office of Husch Blackwell LLP.

After graduation, Warren plans to take the Missouri bar exam and work in St. Louis. Until then, she’ll continue to apply the lessons she’s learned so far at Iowa Law.

“The best lesson I’ve gained from law school is to take advantage of the available opportunities and resources,” she says. “Secondly, get to know your peers and professors.”
