Current employer:

United States District Court

Location:

Des Moines

Job title:

Law Clerk

Description of what you do:

As a law clerk I support the work of my judge.  I write and edit orders on motions in civil and criminal cases, help to manage our docket, and research legal issues as they arise during trial, motions practice, and criminal sentencing.  My days are mostly filled with reading and writing.

Your favorite part of your job:

I enjoy the creative and analytical aspects of clerking.  Checking the accuracy of the work that the parties submit to the court is one of my favorite aspects of the work so far.

What advice do you have for success in summer positions:

Don't give more work to the people for which you are working.  Try to make their job easier through your own work.  And learn as much as you can, especially if you have the chance to be in court!
