Hilary Moise ( Class of 2014)

Hometown: Irvine, CA

Undergraduate school and major: George Washington University, BA in Latin American and Latino Cultural Studies

What did you come to law school to become: I went to law school to become a public interest lawyer and serve low-income communities in either immigration law or health law.

Current employer: California Department of Public Health, Office of Legal Services

Location: Sacramento, CA

Job title: Attorney

Previous positions: Legal Services of Northern California Health Rights Project, Staff Attorney 2014-2018

Description of what you do: I write regulations to address the needs of CDPH's 200+ public health programs. I work with the program directors (the client) to create laws that will promote the department's public health goals for Californians and comply with existing law at the state and federal level. I also advise the department on responses to public records act requests that are complex or raise legal issues.

Your favorite part of your job: The problem-solving aspect of drafting a regulation requires teamwork and an interdisciplinary approach. I learn so much from the subject matter experts and the attorneys that I work with, across all of the disciplines that intersect with public health.

Your interests outside of work: Hiking, canoeing, and biking the beautiful wild areas of Northern California.

What is your favorite movie: A League of Their Own

What do you wish your 1L/2L/3L self knew about the job search: It is so helpful to talk to people who have jobs in your field of interest, to get an inside perspective and a sense of whether you could actually see yourself in that field. Plus, employers take notice when a prospective hire has done their research and is well-informed about the industry/field.

What advice do you have for success in summer positions: Be persistent! There is so much work that could be handed off to a summer associate, but it may take a lot of asking to get assigned the interesting work. Also, don't blow a deadline if you want to continue getting interesting assignments.
