 Jeff Schott is the Director of the Institute of Public Affairs at the University of Iowa.  Since 2006, he has been responsible for delivery of the Institute of Public Affairs’ organizational improvement programs, including goal setting, strategic planning, council/board effectiveness training, educational programs and information, public management assistance, and staff training, to hundreds of local governments across Iowa.

Schott has served local governments in Iowa as City Manager for the City of Marion (1987 – 2006),  Community Development Director for the City of Marion, (1977 – 86), and Planning Coordinator/Assistant Community Development Director for the City of Muscatine, Iowa (1975 – 77). He served on the Executive Board of the Iowa league of Cities from 2000 – 04.  He has also served on the Board of Directors and was President of the Iowa City/County Management Association, the Iowa Chapter of the American Planning Association, and the Eastern Iowa Planning and Zoning Officials Association.  He was one of the co-founders of the northeast Iowa Regional League and served for many years on their Board of Directors as Secretary-Treasurer.

Schott received the prestigious Joe Lukehart Service Award from the Iowa City/County Management Association in 2004 for outstanding contributions to the development and support of the city management profession in Iowa.  He received the Iowa League of Cities’ Hall of Fame award in 2011 for outstanding service to the League and municipal governments throughout the state.  He also received the State of Iowa Governor’s leadership Award in 1983.

Schott also serves as a “Range Rider” for both the International and Iowa City/County Management Associations.  In this capacity, he provides assistance in the form of counseling, experience and support to the city management professionals in these organizations. He has provided assistance and information to numerous communities evaluating their forms of government or seeking to enhance organizational effectiveness.

Schott has been a featured presenter regarding local government issues and concerns at numerous conferences and workshops for organizations such as the Iowa League of Cities, Municipal Leadership Academies, National League of Cities, Iowa City/County Management Association, Iowa Parks and Recreation Association, Iowa Civil Rights Commission, Iowa Department of Transportation, Iowa State Association of Counties, Northeast, South Central and Des Moines metro regional leagues, and many other state and regional groups.  Schott is also an adjunct instructor in the University of Iowa School of Urban and Regional Planning.
