Extra-curricular or co-curricular activities in which you were involved during law school: My most important co-curricular activity during law school was being an engaged and supportive mother to my two daughters while pursuing my law degree.

What did you come to law school to become:

A strong advocate for those whose voices are unheard and/or undervalued.

Current employer:

Iowa Environmental Council

Location:

Des Moines IA

Job title:

Executive Director

What is your pinnacle career goal:

Lead a regional or national campaign or organization fighting for clean water and clean energy.

Description of what you do:

My job as Executive Director is to oversee operations, manage financial performance, and fulfill the tenets of the strategic plan of our organization, the Iowa Environmental Council, a 501c3 in operation since 1995. I work closely with our board leadership to understand the mission and vision they have put forth and how our staff can work to achieve those goals through community outreach, strategic planning, and effective programming. We engage policymakers, regulatory agencies, and legislators; we advocate for a healthy, safe, and sustainable future for Iowa.

Your favorite part of your job:

Telling our story to community groups, lawmakers, donors, partners, and potential staff people.

Your interests outside of work:

Bicycling in the beautiful Raccoon River Valley and enthusiastically supporting the pubs along the trails.

What advice do you have for success in summer positions:

Best advice I ever got was from a mentor at the Iowa Attorney General's Office:  When a mentor asks you if you will do a particular job-related activity, take on a challenge, or attempt to do a project you've never done before . . . never say 'no'.  Great advice.
