Kristymarie Shipley ( Class of 2015)

Hometown: Caguas, Puerto Rico

Undergraduate school and major: B.A. Spanish, B.S. Psychology from the University of Florida

Extra-curricular or co-curricular activities in which you were involved during law school:

Transnational Law and Contemporary Problems, Baskerville Traveling Appellate Advocacy Team, Legal Clinic, Research Assistant for Professor Enrique Carrasco, Equal Justice Foundation, VITA.

What did you come to law school to become:

I wanted to be a consumer protection attorney. I became a labor and employment attorney.

Current employer:

Shuttleworth & Ingersoll

Cedar Rapids, Iowa

Job title:

Associate Attorney

What is your pinnacle career goal:

Equity partnership.

Description of what you do:

I am a labor and employment attorney, which means I work with individuals and companies as they manage the relationships they spend most of their time cultivating. This usually means risk management, compliance, and prevention. Unfortunately, other times this means litigation.

Your favorite part of your job:

No two days are the same.

Your interests outside of work:

Korean soap operas, taking walks with my husband and child, and reading.

What do you wish your 1L/2L/3L self knew about the job search:

Your 1L first semester grades are one of the most important determining factors for your first summer job. A judicial internship or clerkship is a great learning experience and will be helpful in whatever you decide to do in the future. Think about what you can do for your employer, and do your best to communicate that.

What advice do you have for success in summer positions:

Go everywhere they invite you to because learning happens in the quiet one-on-ones more than through the lengthy solo memo drafting.
