Retention Redux: Iowa 2012

In 2010, amidst continuing debate about the Iowa Supreme Court’s ruling in Varnum v. Brien that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry, Iowa voters removed three of that court’s seven justices from office.  In 2012, however, Iowa voters opted to retain a fourth member of the Varnum court.  In this paper, Professor Pettys seeks to explain that difference in the Varnum justices’ political fortunes.  To read the paper, click here and then press the “download this paper” button.
