Stephanie Hernan ( Class of 2014)

Hometown: New Hyde Park, New York

Undergraduate school and major: Stony Brook University - Political Science and History

What did you come to law school to become:

I wasn't sure what type of law I was interested in when I came to law school. I had worked with some trust and estates attorneys at my prior job (non-profit planned giving) and I was interested in that area.

Current employer:

Nassau County District Attorney's Office

Location:

Mineola, Long Island, New York

Job title:

Assistant District Attorney

What is your pinnacle career goal:

I'm not sure - I have thought about becoming a Judge or running for a position in local government. I really enjoy serving my community and helping people. I would like to continue to do that for my entire career. I am also interested in research and poli

Description of what you do:

I investigate and prosecute felony cases. I speak with witnesses, victims and defense attorneys. I conference and plea bargain cases with Judges. I conduct pre-trial hearings, present cases to the Grand Jury and try criminal cases.

Your interests outside of work:

Taking care of my daughter and playing with my dog.

What do you wish your 1L/2L/3L self knew about the job search:

Fill your time in law school with extracurriculars you enjoy - and less with what you think an employer wants to see. At least in my profession - an employer wants to see that you are interested in their office as a career- not a stepping stone to something else. Trial advocacy, criminal law cases, etc. are more important than being on a journal.

What advice do you have for success in summer positions:

It's not a vacation - you aren't there to be social and hang out- you are there to work hard and prove yourself if you want a job there. That doesn't mean you have to be cut-throat or competitive - I always look for interviews who work well with others and who work hard and show genuine interest in the work of our office. I look for people I would be happy to work alongside.
