University of Iowa College of Law alumna Tara Sutton (92JD), who serves as Chair of the National Mass Tort Group at Robins Kaplan LLP, has been recognized as Attorney of the Year by Minnesota Lawyer for the third consecutive year. This prestigious award celebrates her exceptional leadership, dedication to public service, and involvement in landmark cases.
In 2024, Tara helped secure a total judgment of $10.5 million in a groundbreaking case against CRC Industries. The case, believed to be the first plaintiff verdict against a dust remover manufacturer, focused on the well known abuse of aerosol dust removers and the failure of CRC Industries to prevent it.
In 2023, Tara's leadership in the landmark State of Minnesota v. Juul Labs case helped achieve a historic $60.5 million settlement with e-cigarette manufacturers JUUL and Altria for deceptive marketing practices targeting Minnesota's youth. This case set a significant precedent as the first of its kind to go to trial and resulted in the largest per capita settlement among the 48 states and territories that settled with Juul.
In 2022, Tara played a pivotal role in the national opioid litigation, helping secure a $589 million settlement for 28 Tribes. A later $3 billion settlement with Walmart provided $77.9 million in additional compensation to Tribes across the nation.
