Iowa Law's tuition and the cost of living in Iowa City are significantly lower compared to peer institutions.

Estimated costs are provided by University of Iowa Graduate Admissions. These numbers help project total costs and are necessary for international students applying for Visas. Limited funding is available through Iowa Law's legal assistantship program and scholarships. Applicants are encouraged to also seek outside funding.

Program costs

Master of Laws (LLM)

University of Iowa Graduate Admissions provides estimated costs for U.S. citizens and international students. It includes tuition and fees in addition to living costs for 12 months. You will need the total if you are an international student applying for a visa. Tuition and fees typically increase each year.

Doctor of Juridical Science (SJD)

University of Iowa Graduate Admissions provides estimated costs. The estimate is based on 18 credits for the first year in residence. SJD students who have not earned an LLM will need to take a total of 24 credits for the LLM. Once the student reaches SJD candidacy, the costs for each semester will be the tuition and fees for only two credits at the applicable SJD rate.

Financial Aid

Under current federal regulations, only U.S. citizens and eligible non-citizens are eligible for federal student loans. Applicants who are not eligible for federal student loans may qualify for private loan programs. Students are encouraged to apply for legal research assistantships.

Other financial assistance

Law Research Assistantship program

These positions are the main form of financial aid for Iowa Law graduate programs. Law research assistants receive reduced tuition, wages, and reduced rates on health insurance.

LLM partial scholarships

Some partial tuition scholarships are available to LLM students only. Students who indicate on their application that they wish to be considered for financial aid will be considered for a scholarship.

International student funding

International students should consider applying for U.S. programs as Fulbright; the Muskie Program for countries of the former Soviet Union, or the Ron Brown Fellowships for Eastern Europe; as well as pursuing funding possibilities within their own countries. The University of Iowa also provides some International funding opportunities.
