The University of Iowa College of Law is proud to congratulate Femi Mojekwu (J.D. candidate, 2027) on being awarded a Peggy Browning Fellowship in workplace justice advocacy. Femi is one of just over 105 law students selected nationwide from a highly competitive pool of more than 3,300 applicants. This prestigious honor recognizes law students who have demonstrated academic excellence and a steadfast commitment to advocating for workers’ rights.

This summer, Femi will join Teamsters Local 117 in Tukwila, Washington, where he will contribute to the union’s legal efforts and gain hands-on experience in the fight for labor justice. For Femi, this opportunity represents more than just professional growth—it reflects a deeply personal journey rooted in his family history and lived experiences.

“This fellowship is a dream come true,” Femi shared. “Admittedly, at the beginning of my journey I didn't want to be a lawyer. I was entirely content being a computer scientist, or even a blues guitarist. After seeing how immigrants and laborers alike are treated when power goes unchecked my empathy forced me to act.”

Born in Houston, Texas, to a Nigerian immigrant father and a union steward mother, Femi witnessed early on the critical importance of organized labor. His mother’s role as a Teamster Steward introduced him to the power of collective action, while his father’s immigration experience ignited a lasting dedication to immigrant rights. That foundation led him to meaningful work at an immigration legal clinic and a public policy fellowship focused on supporting undocumented workers displaced by plant closures.

As a first-year law student, Femi brings that passion to the classroom—and now, to his Peggy Browning Fellowship placement. He is especially eager to learn from the experienced legal professionals and organizers at Teamsters Local 117.

“I'm looking forward to the depth of experience offered the most,” he said. “Being able to participate across every part of the Teamsters’ legal work, with the chance to shadow their other departments, gives me a robust opportunity to learn as much as I can.”

The fellowship also affirms Femi’s professional aspirations. “This fellowship helps to confirm my belonging in the field, bringing me closer to where I've always aspired to be. As a result, I intend to advocate for workers with the same passion that I had over the years.”

Please join us in congratulating Femi on this tremendous achievement. We are inspired by his drive, compassion, and unwavering commitment to justice—and we can’t wait to see the impact he will make.
