The University of Iowa College of Law has earned the No. 13 spot on the latest U.S. News & World Report list of the top 25 law schools with the highest salary-to-debt ratios—highlighting the exceptional value Iowa Law offers its students.
The report evaluated full-time graduates who borrowed and entered the private sector after graduation.
The starting median salary for Iowa Law graduates in 2023 was $160,000, while the average debt incurred in 2024 was $90,031. According to the report, Iowa Law’s salary-to-debt ratio is 1.78-to-1, indicating that graduates are well-positioned to repay their loans.
“At Iowa Law, our students do not choose between excellence and affordability,” Dean Todd Pettys said. “Our students graduate ready to pass the bar and begin their careers, often with less debt and fewer financial constraints.”
It’s not just U.S. News & World Report that has recognized Iowa Law’s strong value.
For more than a decade, the school has been ranked a Best Value Law School by The National Jurist. Iowa Law’s Class of 2024 achieved a 99% job placement rate and a 91% bar passage rate among first-time test takers. These success metrics, combined with competitive tuition and a Midwest cost of living, make Iowa Law a standout for value.
The college offers many scholarships and funding opportunities, including a robust law research assistantship program. Out-of-state students can qualify for resident tuition during their second and third years of study if they serve as law research assistants for faculty or for the college.
“Students have a great opportunity to work with faculty, staff, and leadership in the college while earning an income, health insurance, and reducing their potential debt load with in-state tuition,” Josh Patterson, Iowa Law director of financial aid, said. “This is a great program for students to supplement their classroom experiences and enhance their résumés.”
According to the report, students who graduated in 2024 from 127 ranked law schools incurred an average debt of $107,193. Iowa Law students averaged about $17,000 less in debt.
