Anya Prince, the David H. Vernon Professor in Law at the University of Iowa College of Law, was featured in a Wall Street Journal article that assessed whether life insurance companies can use genetic-testing information in underwriting.

In the article, Prince discussed bills in different states’ legislatures that propose stricter rules regulating how life insurance companies can use genetic-testing information, as well as how certain model acts fall short in protecting insured individuals. Prince also explained issues with a lack of laws prohibiting the use of direct-to-consumer genetic test results, such as 23andMe, and offered advice to those considering purchasing life insurance.

Prince is an expert in health and genetic privacy with a particular focus on genetic discrimination, the health privacy implications of big data, and the ethical, legal, and social implications of genomic testing. She also maintains interactive maps that list how states govern insurance and law enforcement usage of genetic information.
