Take advantage of a free ISBA membership as a law student
Join the Iowa State Bar Association for free as a law student and take advantage of a variety of professional and wellness programming, including a free Jigsaw puzzle competition in Cedar Rapids on Feb 15. RSVP by Feb. 11.
ISBA membership requests can be emailed to Mary Hill at mhill@iowabar.org. She will need your name, mailing address, phone number, and law school email address. Alternatively, you can join thru the ISBA’s membership portal. The portal will request a last name lookup to avoid duplicate records. From there, you can proceed to “Create a new record." On that screen, use your uiowa.edu email address. On the remaining screens, you can ignore all fields except “Contact type” (Law Student) and “Address Preferences”. Don’t worry, membership is free unless you choose to take advantage of a $20 section membership (these are for specific areas of the law you are interested in and provide section listserv access and inside scoops with attorneys who practice in those areas).
The Boyd Food Pantry is now the Boyd Snack Shack
The Boyd Food Pantry has been rebranded as the Boyd Snack Shack. Located to the right of The Eat Shop doors on the first floor, this resource remains available to all members of the Boyd community. The primary change from last semester is that this resource will now focus on stocking snack foods. People who wish to donate to the snack shack should focus on single-serving items, such as granola bars, cracker sandwiches, ramen packets, and trail mix. Canned goods will also be accepted by the Snack Shack. The refrigerator in the Snack Shack will be used for non-perishable drinks, such as bottled water, Gatorade, and single-serving sodas. The Snack Shack is not able to accept donated perishable items. Students, staff, and faculty who seek a more comprehensive food pantry experience should visit the Food Pantry at Iowa in the IMU. For more information about the newly rebranded Snack Shack, please direct questions to Sam Ramsey at samantha-ramsey@uowa.edu.
Commercial Arbitration Moot for students interested in International Business Law
In past years, the Iowa Law School has fielded a team in the Wilhelm Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot. Nearly 200 schools worldwide participate. It is a unique experience.
The moot operates as follows. In October, a problem is released. In general, it is an international sales contract that has somehow gone badly, and the contract has an arbitration clause. The problems set out 4 issues to be briefed and mooted. The first two deal with contract issues, and the second two focus on the arbitration clause and the rules of the selected tribunal. Past years' problems and briefs can be found on the website.
Four to six students will be selected to participate. In October through December, the Claimant's brief is written. Submission is around the first week in December. The team thereafter receives another school's Claimant's brief and writes a Respondent's brief due in late January.
The writing phase completed, the team practices intensively the advocacy skills. There is a pre-moot, perhaps Chicago, with a final moot in Vienna the week before Easter. The law school has a fund to cover costs.
Students receive 1 credit each semester for the course. If you are in the Jessup Competition, you cannot apply because the schedules are parallel. A judgment will be made in December as to whether the team's performance in the writing phase justifies the trip to Vienna. With one year as an exception, teams have always gone to Vienna. It is a wonderful experience, but it only makes sense if the team is committed to the program.
Second- and third-year students are eligible. There will be an organizational meeting in the first week of class.
