The George Washington University has appointed University of Iowa alumna Traevena Byrd as its next vice president and general counsel, effective Aug. 4. Byrd earned her J.D.  from UIOWA College of Law and her B.A. in African-American/Black Studies from UIOWA. 

Byrd currently serves as vice president, general counsel and board secretary at American University and brings more than two decades of higher education legal experience. In her new role, she will lead GW's Office of the General Counsel and provide strategic legal counsel to university leadership and the Board of Trustees.
