Non-resident Law Opportunity Fellowship Information
Information for residents who have a Law Opportunity Fellowship
What is a Law Opportunity Tuition Fellowship?
The College of Law is committed to affording opportunities for legal careers to persons historically underrepresented in the legal profession. The Law Opportunity Fellowship (LOF) program was established by the University to provide access to law school for students from groups and backgrounds historically underrepresented within the legal community. Among the criteria considered in awarding the fellowships are: educationally and/or socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds, leadership potential, and academic merit.
Do I need to do anything to receive my LOF?
To receive your LOF award, you must also apply for financial aid by submitting a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each academic year and submit all of the required forms as soon as possible. You will be considered for Federal Direct Student Loans after you complete the FAFSA and required documents.
The fellowship requires that the recipient remain in good academic and professional standing at the College of Law. For complete renewal details, see our website.
Where do I find information on tuition and fees?
Tuition rates are set by the Iowa Board of Regents. Rates are available on our website.
What is the difference between mandatory fees and enrollment-based fees?
Mandatory Fees are required for all students. Enrollment-based (found in the Tuition & Fees section in MyUI) are based on a student’s enrollment in a particular course. Enrollment-based fees are not covered by Merit Tuition or Law Opportunity Fellowships (Enrollment-based fees include elective experiences like Intersession Study Abroad).

What is a Law Research Assistant position and why do I want one?
A Law Research Assistant (LRA) position is an opportunity for a law student to work an average of 10 hours per week with a member of the law school faculty. Under current University of Iowa practice, LRAs are entitled to the following benefits: resident tuition, a small salary, and subsidized health insurance. LRA positions are available with a variety of faculty members and are a wonderful way for law students to enhance their legal education and add experience to their résumés.
