When Dane Beaulieu graduated from college, he knew he wanted to go to law school to study Indian Law, the field that regulates the complex legal relationships between Native American nations, the United States, and the states. As he checked out law schools looking for a good program, he came upon the University of Iowa Law School.

In 2022, Lex enrolled in the Advanced Standing Program at Iowa Law, drawn not only by the program’s efficiency but also by the positive testimonials from friends who had followed the same path. During his first summer of law school, Lex worked as a Summer Associate at Dechert LLP in New York City, New York, where he will return after graduation. Lex credits his readiness for the real-world legal landscape to the guidance and teachings of his professors at Iowa Law.

Iowa Law celebrates the 2023 human rights scholarship recipients. Professors Ken Cmiel and Burns Weston shared a common passion: building the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights—a unit of the College of Law—into a world-class, cross-disciplinary resource for human rights education, research, and service. Their scholarships are supporting the next generation of human rights advocates.
