The Iowa Law School is pleased to welcome Professor Bethany Berger—one of the nation’s foremost experts in federal Indian Law, widely read scholar of Property Law, and legal historian—to its faculty. Berger will begin her appointment as Alan D. Vestal Professor of Law in August 2024.

The University of Iowa College of Law is pleased to announce that Kate Melloy Goettel, a national leader in immigration law and federal court practice, will join the faculty in August 2024.

Justin Rempe from University of Iowa College of Law has been awarded a Peggy Browning Fund fellowship in workplace justice advocacy. This summer he will be working at United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) in Triangle, VA.

Kevin Washburn, who joined the University of Iowa College of Law as dean in 2018, has announced that he will step down from the position at the end of the year, effective on Dec. 31, 2024. During his tenure as dean, Washburn developed a vision for the College of Law as the “Writing Law School” and helped develop an ambitious new environmental law program known as the Hubbell Environmental Law Initiative.

A recent workshop by the College of Law and College of Nursing educated students on end-of-life legal and healthcare issues, emphasizing the practical challenges and importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between future legal and healthcare practitioners.

Iowa Law is pleased to announce that Samantha Barbas will join the Iowa Law School faculty in August. Barbas is a prominent scholar and presenter of legal and media history—with a focus on journalism, privacy, defamation, and the First Amendment—and the award-winning author of seven full-length books.

Through the Community Empowerment Law Project (CELP), Iowa Law students worked with the Iowa Initiative for Sustainable Communities and their partnership with the City of Dubuque to collect and synthesize information, and create an action plan to help K-12 Marshallese students improve school attendance.

The University of Iowa College of Law is pleased to welcome alumna Jill Wieber Lens to the faculty. Lens, who will start her appointment in August 2024, will serve as the Dorothy M. Willie Professor in Excellence.

Third-year law student Jonathan Picado shares about his journey in environmental law and how he plans to address environmental injustices after graduation. Last summer, Jonathan was awarded a Hubbell Environmental Law Fellowship to his support his summer work at the Department of Justice Environment and Natural Resources Division.
