Commercial Arbitration Moot for students interested in International Business Law

In past years, the Iowa Law School has fielded a team in the Wilhelm Vis International Commercial Arbitration Moot.  Nearly 200 schools worldwide participate. It is a unique experience.

The moot operates as follows. In October, a problem is released. In general, it is an international sales contract that has somehow gone badly, and the contract has an arbitration clause. The problems set out 4 issues to be briefed and mooted.  The first two deal with contract issues, and the second two focus on the arbitration clause and the rules of the selected tribunal.  Past years' problems and briefs can be found on the website.

Four to six students will be selected to participate. In October through December, the Claimant's brief is written. Submission is around the first week in December. The team thereafter receives another school's Claimant's brief and writes a Respondent's brief due in late January.

The writing phase completed, the team practices intensively the advocacy skills. There is a pre-moot, perhaps Chicago, with a final moot in Vienna the week before Easter.  The law school has a fund to cover costs.

Students receive 1 credit each semester for the course. If you are in the Jessup Competition, you cannot apply because the schedules are parallel. A judgment will be made in December as to whether the team's performance in the writing phase justifies the trip to Vienna. With one year as an exception, teams have always gone to Vienna. It is a wonderful experience, but it only makes sense if the team is committed to the program.

Second- and third-year students are eligible. There will be an organizational meeting in the first week of class.

The Judge John R. Brown Scholarship Foundation 33rd Annual Brown Award

Two current copies of legal writing must be submitted along with a letter of recommendation from a law school faculty member or legal professional other than the author of the paper. Submissions must be postmarked no later than May 29th, 2026. See the website for more details on requirements.
