Our goal is to broaden the understanding of and access to law and legal systems in Iowa and the world.

Strategy #1: Make the College of Law more visible in the nation and the world while increasing Iowans’ access to legal knowledge and expertise provided by the College of Law faculty, staff, and students.

Increase engagement with the local, state, and national bar associations. 

  • Increase number of faculty and staff members of the Iowa Bar. In progress.

  • Increase number of faculty and staff participation in bar activities at the state or national level, or both, related to their areas of expertise. In progress.

Increase engagement with all branches of government at the local, state and federal levels. 

  • Increase number of faculty and centers providing advice to policy makers. In progress.

Increase the visibility of College of Law faculty expertise in Iowa, the nation, and the world, by participating in law reform activities and engagement in learned communities.

Expand learning and service opportunities in law that broaden the College of Law’s reach across Iowa, the nation, and the world. 

  • Increased promotion of the contributions of Law Library’s role in making legal information accessible to Iowans. In progress.

  • Increase number and variety of learning opportunities for Iowans who are engaged in learning about law and legal systems. In progress.

  • Increase Iowa Law students working as research assistants in affiliated research centers and providing educational and other services to Iowans. In progress.

Enhance and provide legal clinical services that provide students with a high-quality educational experience while addressing significant needs of our community and Iowa, using the intellectual power of Iowa Law to make a practical impact. 

  • Increased percentage of students who wish to enroll in the Legal Clinic being able to do so, and increased awareness of clinic services in the wider community.  In progress.

Strategy #2: Provide resources and programming on initiatives that engage students in improving access to justice.

Maintain and expand programming and opportunities that enable students to participate directly in providing legal services to needy populations, including rural Iowans.  

  • Guaranteed clinic enrollment for all students interested in clinic internships at some point during their time in law school. In progress.

Expand financial support for students working in public interest externships and internships. 

  • Increased percentage of students seeking summer internships with a public interest or public service focus who successfully obtain such opportunities. In progress.

  • Increased percentage of the students seeking public service and public interest career paths who succeed in finding those placements following graduation. In progress.
