NLG Digital Forensics Seminar

A smartphone is a digital diary, location tracker, and personal secretary; and police can access all of it (sometimes without a warrant). Investigator Kristofer Lyon, a Digital Forensics Specialist and Defense Investigator with the Office of the State Public Defender, breaks down essential technology that law enforcement uses, providing foundational knowledge for new attorneys to defend their client's Fourth Amendment rights in the digital age.

Students will learn:
· How tools like Cellebrite's UFED capture more than just texts, pictures, and call logs, giving police access to data intended to be protected by passwords.
· Why consenting to a phone search is more dangerous than your client realizes.
· When to challenge extraction of irrelevant, private data as a violation of the Fourth Amendment.
