Emily Hughes, the Edward F. Howrey Professor of Law, was featured on CBS’s Iowa network KGAN to interpret part of District Court Judge David Cox’s findings in State of Iowa v. Matthew Schleier. Schleier had been charged with first-degree murder in the death of his son, but Cox ruled he was not guilty by reason of insanity.

Hughes provided commentary on a portion of Cox’s summary that described his perception of an action taken by the prosecution to reverse course. She was quoted in the story and appeared in the broadcast.

Hughes teaches criminal law and criminal procedure at the University of Iowa College of Law and has a professional background in public defense.
