Megan Graham, clinical professor and director of the Technology Law Clinic at the University of Iowa College of Law, was featured in a Minnesota Star Tribune article investigating the use of license plate camera footage for immigration purposes.
Automated license plate readers throughout Minneapolis, including Flock cameras, collect data that can be used to reveal individuals’ travel histories. The investigative piece sought to explain how government agencies like the Department of Homeland Security were able to access the Flock data to use for immigration enforcement purposes, like last winter’s Operation Metro Surge.
Graham’s work in the Technology Law Clinic focuses on the role technology plays in criminal cases and the broader legal system. Graham was consulted during the investigation and quoted in the article. She explained how public concern over the installation of Flock cameras stems from worries about access to the data itself.
