Megan Graham, associate clinical professor and director of the Technology Law Clinic at the University of Iowa College of Law, recently appeared on the Public Defenseless podcast to discuss how emerging technologies are reshaping the criminal legal system. The podcast, which mainly highlights the work of public defenders across the country, provided a platform for Graham to share her unique perspective on the intersection of technology and public defense.

A nationally recognized expert in technology law and surveillance, Graham spoke about the role her clinic plays in helping public defenders navigate complex technological evidence. She and her students serve as translators and advisors, helping to bridge the knowledge gap between lawyers and technology experts to ensure fair outcomes for clients facing criminal charges.

During the conversation, Graham emphasized the importance of legal advocates who can both understand technical tools and apply constitutional principles. She offered examples of how public defenders are increasingly forced to grapple with new technologies, such as digital forensics software and data-sharing through fusion centers. She explained how her students research the underlying science, identify legal implications, and support defenders in crafting stronger legal arguments for their clients.
