They come from all over the country and teach on subjects from first year classes to niche subjects. Some say they always aspired to become professors, and some came to academia by a more winding route. These are some of the many Iowa Law alumni who now make their mark as professors.

This fall marks one of Iowa Law's largest clerkship classes yet. Follow the path of several alumni judges who began their law careers as judicial clerks and are now serving in county, state, and federal courts across the country.

By the time Scott Selix (JD14) was a 3L at Iowa Law he saw an opportunity to get back into the craft beer industry. He later started his own brewery in Des Moines, IA—Lua Brewing.

The University of Iowa College of Law announces the creation of an Alumni-led council, committed to bolster diversity, equity, and inclusion. The Alumni DEI Council is a select group of Iowa Law’s alumni who foster accountability in maintaining and increasing DEI efforts at the College of Law.

Rapid changes in health care practices and regulations over the past few years have created a greater need for people who understand the convergence between law and health care, making Iowa’s JD-MHA combined degree program more appealing than ever for students and employers.

Abishi Cunningham came to Iowa Law in 1939. In his home state, West Virginia University did not accept black students. He graduated in 1941 and returned to West Virginia to open his legal practice. His daughter and grandchildren recently visited Iowa Law to learn more about their family's legacy.

Theodore "Ted" M. Seldin was an entrepreneur with a passion for giving back. He was instrumental in shaping the national and local legislation related to affordable and fair-housing statutes and a generous advocate of the University of Iowa and the College of Law. During his 89 years, Ted made a lasting impact on all of the communities he served.

In 2009, Iowa Law launched an alumni awards program to recognize law alumni who have made significant achievements in their careers and in their service to the College of Law. The program features four award categories: Emerging Leader, Alumni Achievement, Alumni Service, and the Iowa Law Review Alumni Achievement.

Iowa Law’s community fosters leadership skills that have resulted in a number of faculty members becoming leaders at law schools across the country and earned Iowa Law an informal reputation of “Law Dean School” along the way.

This Veterans Day we sat down with Amy Kretkowski, a 2008 alumnae and current adjunct professor at Iowa Law teaching Veterans Benefits Law, to learn more about the passion behind her work.

The University of Iowa College of Law recently announced the hiring of Neda Barrett as its first Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion and Global Engagement.

“Following the death of George Floyd and amongst the extensive historical backdrop of police brutality among communities of color, we understood that it was time to do more and address racism in the College of Law,” said Committee member Meddie Demmings IV, “The College of Law recognized this, too, and gave us the green light to meet, talk, and submit this report.” 

The portraits lining the corridor at Boyd Law Building represent a long standing tradition dedicated to those who devote their lives to teaching law school. Faculty who have taught law for 25 or more years - 15 of those years being at Iowa - have the opportunity to have their portrait painted if they wish. Professor Sandler’s portrait will hang among many esteemed colleagues like Dean Adrien Wing and Professor Emeritus William Buss.

Black Lives Matter. We, the members of the University of Iowa College of Law Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and the Black Law Students Association, write this statement in support of those directly and indirectly suffering from the consequences of racism and inequality.

Commencement is a joyous occasion for students. It marks the completion of a degree attained through hard work and dedication. To celebrate this exciting time, it is common for a graduate to gather with their friends and family to share a meal together.

Zac McFarland originally wanted to play professional football, but picked Esq. over ESPN. The University of Iowa College of Law student will join the Minneapolis law firm Fredrikson & Byron after graduation.

Know how important visits are in the decision making process, Winnie Uluocha created a fund to help support underrepresented students visit our campus. In addition to her giving, Uluocha has made significant contributions toward furthering the university’s human rights policy through her work at the Colleges of Law and Public Health, service on diversity committees at both colleges, and a leadership role in the Black Law Students Association.

Alum Joel Bolger is the only judge to have been appointed to all four levels of the Alaska court system. He reflects on the lessons learned while at Iowa Law.
